i like the ouat theme of parents trying to redeem themselves in the eyes of their children- or more specifically, I love that this is a show about PARENTS who are also CHARACTERS and don’t just fill a babysitting quota. the family relationships on this show are incredible. the parents on this show are amazing and diverse and beautiful. in a way, the whole show is really a lovesong to mother and fatherhood.
regina found henry unexpectedly and with that, her sole motivation for living. her love for henry is all consuming and completely 100% dominates her personality and life choices. she doesn’t know how to love and it can be warped, but her love is her identity.
cora always dominated her daughter completely, and continues to do so while both asserting and believing that she loves her. like regina, her child is the motivation for her actions. her love if selfish.
emma and bae never knew their child and now that they have him, they are never going to let him go. they are learning to understand what it means to love a child. their love is about discovery.
rumpel took his son for granted and disregarded his love. at some point he realized life wasn’t worth living without it. his love came too late.
jefferson became a different man when his girl was born. he went from being selfish and manipulative to doting and selfless. his love changed him.
milah gave her boy up to live a life more ideal to her standards. she is an example of a mother who never really learned to love her child (and not all parents do)
snow and charming were robbed of their chance to be with their daughter and it crushed them. they were friends with their little girl before they could ever love her like a parent deserves to love their child..yet it was worth it to save her. their love is selfless.
geppetto wanted a child so much that he made one for himself despite all of the forces of nature, only to have to give up that child to save him. his love is sorrow.
consider that though secondary characters are also parents, ALL of the main characters are parents.
If you don’t think ONCE is about parents and the diverse ways they love their children i don’t understand u. for all of the show’s flaws, the idea that being a parent is a journey that should be celebrated isn’t really that common of a theme on tv, and the idea of being a parent is usually used in boring, unemotional/unfulfilling ways on tv. OUAT treats the idea of loving a child like an adventure. that’s so cool to me.

this poor girl has been wiped of her memory, imprisoned, purposefully and directly made to think she’s insane… and chain-tranquilized into submission — HOW IS THIS NOT BOTHERING PEOPLE!? this is the same fandom that regularly debates gaslighting, right? AHHH! WTF.
